  1. THE LANTERN MAKER OF AI HANLO - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Tom O'Bedlam's Night Out and Other Strange Excursions," by Darrell Schweitzer, published by Ganley in 1985.

We live in a world where all kinds of mysterious and unexplainable things have been said to occur, but I have never seen any of them. In my world there is no mystery, everything is explainable by the scientific method.

But I have known people who claim to have been involved with an unexplainable mystery; At Simmonds one day I talked to a manager, Jim McDermoth, who was distraught because his three year old daughter claimed to be getting visitations in her bedroom in the middle of the night by an old woman who wanted to know what they were doing in her house. About a year before, Jim had bought a 200 year old stone house several miles out of town, in the backwoods of Vermont. He has stayed up nights with his daughter waiting for the old woman to appear, but she never does when he's there. He seemed genuinely disturbed because his daughter told him the old woman had come again last night!

In 1973, the man who came to buy my first house in Middlebury, Vt., and who also worked at Simmonds, couldn't wait to tell me and my wife about the flying saucer he and his family saw as they were driving along route seven a few nights ago. His wife and nine year old son were just as excited to tell us about it. They seemed sincere!

John Russell, an engineer who had a desk next to mine for a while, came from NY to work for Simmonds Precision, rented an old farmhouse north of Burlington, Vt. His wife was terrified living there, she claimed she saw an old man dressed like a pilgrim, wandering around the back of their property by an old grave marker. And she swears she could see through him! John and his wife moved back to NY.

I can't explain these mysteries, and I still can't believe them.
